HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

Corona virus which is also referred to as COVID-19 is the latest pandemic to hit the world. At the moment, there are more than 250,000 recorded cases of the disease, with 89,914 recoveries and 10,549 deaths.

This is a zoonotic kind of a virus; this means that it can be transmitted from animals to people. Many people believe that it came from bats while others believe that it was manufactured in a lab. The disease can infect your respiratory organs and the lungs, with its first case emerging in China. Europe is the region with the highest 24 hour spikes in the new infections. On the other hand, China is winning its battle against the virus with most of its makeshift hospitals being closed because the number of new infections has reduced.

The symptoms of Coronavirus can usually take up to a fortnight (14 days) to be seen. The primary symptoms to observe are;

  • Fever ( High body temperatures of above 38 Degrees Celsius)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulties in breathing
  • Coughing; not necessarily a dry cough

When an individual is suffering from a severe case of this disease, the virus can cause kidney failure, severe acute respiratory syndrome, pneumonia or even death. 

For individuals who contract the virus, the disease is mild in 80% of the individuals, more grievous in about 14% and in the remaining 6% it is extremely critical. Scientists are yet to find a vaccine that can protect an individual from getting this virus. The most effective way to avoid transmission is to avoid exposure to the virus. This virus is easily spread between people in close reach of about less than 6 feet from each other. It spreads through droplets from a victim's sneezes or coughs landing in the eyes, noses or in the mouths of individuals in close range.

Protective Measures to stop infection of yourself and others

  • Keep a distance of not less than two metres from someone who is sneezing or coughing; to stop yourself from inhaling droplets that might carry the virus.
  • Observe respiratory hygiene i.e by covering your nose and mouth when sneezing since droplets spread the virus
  • Frequently clean your hands with a hand sanitizer or with soap and water to kill the viruses. You risk getting the virus if you touch a surface that has an infected droplet then you touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes because contaminated hands can easily transfer the virus into your body through these openings.
  • Stay home and call for medical attention in advance to protect yourself and prevent further spread if you develop symptoms. Inform your medical personnels of any recent contacts with anyone.
  • Stay informed with the latest updates about the virus to know the best way to protect yourself.
  • Wear a facemask if you are infected since it acts as an alternative of covering your face with your hands while sneezing to prevent infection through droplets.
  • Clean objects and surfaces that are touched by many people using a household cleaner or sanitizer.
  • Stay at home to avoid interacting with people who might have the virus.

Lee, who prefers not to be named for fear of being shunned, is a 21-year-old student from Wuhan. It was on 21st January when he first thought that he might be ill. It all started when he started feeling weak and his temperature rose. He was rushed to hospital at about midnight only to find the hospital's waiting bay with dozens of patients like him. He says that this frightened him since he had never been in a situation like this before.

Since the wait at this hospital never seemed to end, he deserted it for a smaller clinic where he managed to secure medicine to cure his symptoms. The doctors advised him to simply go home and quarantine himself since his symptoms were not life-threatening. The disease was harsh during its first four days.

Thousands of people had died in Hubei, the Chinese province where Wuhan is the capital, therefore the government had locked down the city. Lee's condition had also grown worse and he said that he felt like he would die because of his severe cough. Diagnosis for the illness was also a problem in the city since the capacity of hospitals could not serve the number of people who suspected to have the virus. Soon, Lee's brother and grandmother also started showing symptoms. One night his condition got out of hand so terribly that he thought he might die. He was immediately taken back to the hospital and his temperature was at 39 degrees Celsius. The doctors put him on medication using some anti-HIV drugs that had shown some achievement in fighting the virus.

On January 29th, Lee's health was gradually getting better when he finally tested positive for the virus. He was sent to quarantine and nine days later, on February 7th, he tested negative. The local government quarantined him in a hotel before sending him home five days later.

Lee is one of the fortunate ones, having recovered from the sickness partly because his father was a health care worker who knew the danger earlier than most people in Wuhan. His advice to other people in countries that are facing this problem is simple: “Stay away from other people,” he says.
